Stockgehen – Foot Massage with the GeMa Stick

Stockgehen – foot massage with the GeMa Stick

A simple exercise with a long tradition.

In Stockgehen, the stick rests on the floor. Barefoot, you take small steps over it, consciously rolling it under the soles of your feet – from your toes to your heels and along the inner and outer edges.

The pressure of the stick provides an intensive massage and stimulation of the soles. You control the pressure through your body weight and movement, allowing you to practise slowly and at your own pace.

Roots in Do-In and acupressure

Stockgehen is associated with Do-In and shiatsu. Do-In brings together traditional exercises involving movement, breathing, stretching, pressure and self-massage.

Similarly, acupressure uses pressure on specific areas of the body. In Stockgehen, the focus is on consciously stimulating the soles of the feet.

Why Stockgehen?

Our feet carry us every day, yet often receive little attention. Stockgehen gives you a chance to make time for your feet and your own body awareness.

In our own practice and in feedback from people who practise Stockgehen, experiences include greater awareness of the feet and body, pleasantly warm feet, and feelings of relaxation, calm and grounding. Some find the exercise calming; others find it invigorating.

These points describe subjective experiences rather than medically guaranteed effects.

Head, hands and feet

At GeMa, we also see the head, hands and feet symbolically. The head represents thoughts, perception, ideas and visions. The hands represent understanding, acting, holding on and letting go. The feet carry us, give us stability and take us forward step by step.

These images remind us to become more aware of our bodies and spend less time caught up in our thoughts.

The head – becoming aware and finding calm

Everyday life is full of information and stimulation. Taking mindful breaks, breathing calmly or practising simple awareness exercises can help you turn your attention away from daily demands and back to yourself for a moment.

One simple exercise is to gently hold your forehead and the back of your head: place one hand on your forehead and the other on the back of your head, close your eyes and take a few calm breaths. Simply notice your breathing and how the exercise feels.

The hands – understanding and letting go

Our hands are involved in almost everything we do. Expressions such as “having something in hand”, “grasping an idea” and “letting go” reveal the symbolic meaning we give them.

The GeMa Stick can also be used for hand acupressure and mindful massage of the palms . Roll or press it only as firmly as feels comfortable.

The feet – our foundation

“Standing on your own two feet”, “putting one foot in front of the other” and “losing the ground beneath your feet” – our language directly connects the feet with stability, movement and direction.

Stockgehen brings your attention to this foundation. You feel the soles of your feet, move slowly and decide how much pressure is comfortable.

Grounding – what we mean by it

At GeMa, grounding primarily means consciously returning to the present moment: feeling the ground beneath your feet, noticing your body and stepping out of your stream of thoughts for a few minutes.

Walking barefoot in nature can be a particularly direct way to experience this. For us, Stockgehen draws on the same idea – even when there is no meadow or forest floor nearby.

We use the term grounding here in the sense of body awareness, connection with nature and personal experience, without making any medical claims.

The GeMa Stick and grounding

More than simply stepping on a stick

The GeMa Stick can be used for more than the soles of your feet. It is also suitable for hand acupressure and a variety of exercises involving tension, relaxation and body awareness .

What makes it special is its simplicity: you need little space, no technical equipment and just a few minutes. The stick can become a small, mindful ritual in everyday life.

Your next step

On the How to use your GeMa Stick page, you will find practical step-by-step instructions, videos and further exercises for your hands, feet and body awareness. We also recommend our 21-day trial for getting started.
