Hike to the Little Pal with Open-Air Museum – A historical circular route through the First World War

The hike to the Little Pal (1,867 m) in the Carnic Alps combines breathtaking mountain landscapes with an impressive insight into the history of the First World War. During the Mountain War (1915–1918), the mountain was a strategically important point between Italy and Austria-Hungary. Today there is an open-air museum that makes the remains of the former positions, trenches and shelters accessible.

Along the way, and especially near the summit, you will encounter well-preserved trenches, shelters, tunnels and caverns that were once built by the soldiers. Information boards explain the historical significance of the positions. Particularly impressive are:

  • Italian and Austro-Hungarian positions
  • Artillery emplacements with spectacular views of the valley
  • Former bunkers and shelters carved into the rock
